The Narendra Modi government notified the required rules for the implementation of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Monday, March 11, four years after it was enacted.
Earlier, in a statement issued on X, the Union Home Minister stated, “The applications for citizenship will be submitted completely online, for which a web portal has been provided.”

The CAA seeks to grant citizenship to Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Christians who allegedly fled persecution in India’s Muslim-majority neighbors – Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh – and arrived in India before 2015.

Banerjee went on to say, “But this is only the BJP’s election campaign advertising. This law was passed in 2020, and it’s been four years since then. Now that elections are approaching, they have introduced this, but it will help no one.”

Ramesh questioned the timing of the rules’ notification before the elections, calling it an attempt to “polarize” and a bid to manage headlines after the Supreme Court rejected the State Bank of India’s earlier request for more time to provide details on electoral bonds.
